Funding has been awarded to principal investigator Kenneth Sherr by the World Health Organization (WHO) for "Global Protocol to Conduct Implementation Research on Self-Administered Subcutaneous Depo-Medroxyprogesterone acetate through Issuing of a Health System".

Abstract:

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends implementation research (IR) to guide the integration and scale up of self-administered sub-cutaneous Depo-Medroxyprogesterone Acetate (DMPA-SC) in the health systems of member states whose governments have authorized this by policy. Accordingly, the WHO has developed a global IR protocol on DMPA-SC self-administration and, in doing so, complements the WHO’s recently issued Consolidated Guidelines in Self Care for Sexual and Reproductive Health, which emphasized self-administration of this contraceptive method. The purpose of this IR is to support national programs undertaking the expansion of this method, both in terms of strategic support for planning this process and designing and carrying out monitoring, evaluation and research aimed at informing it as well. The research protocol synthesizes available knowledge on the application of implementation science to this effect, offers guidance on use of theory during study design, formulation of research questions, adaptation of data collection instruments and data analysis. Furthermore, it emphasizes practical considerations for coordinating stakeholders, setting up and conducting research and data collection, disseminating findings and parlaying new knowledge into frameworks for evidence-based organizational change. Appendices to the protocol include the following for country team adaptation: draft data collection approaches and instruments, pertinent sampling strategies, examples of using theory to develop lines of inquiry, indicators, roles and responsibilities for study personnel, and knowledge management plans.
